Repeat Abuse by the Same Accounts

Some customers exploit every promotion, repeatedly. Here is how to spot and limit it.

The serial discounter

A first order discount is meant to win a new customer once. Some people exploit it repeatedly, creating new accounts or finding ways to claim it again and again, so the discount never does its job of winning a lasting customer.

It defeats the purpose

A promotion abused this way costs you margin without the intended payoff. Instead of converting a new customer, you are simply subsidizing someone gaming the offer, which is the opposite of what the discount was for.

Spot the patterns

Repeat abuse leaves patterns: the same customer, in effect, claiming a one time offer multiple times. Detecting those patterns is what lets you tell a genuine new customer from a serial exploiter.

Limit without alienating

The goal is to limit repeat abuse while keeping first time offers welcoming to genuine new customers. Enforcing sensible limits on abuse, without treating every buyer as a suspect, protects the promotion and the experience.

Key takeaways
  • Serial discounters exploit one time offers repeatedly
  • It costs margin without winning a customer
  • Detect the patterns of repeat claiming
  • Limit abuse without alienating genuine buyers
