Balancing Generosity and Protection

Too strict deters customers; too loose invites abuse. Here is how to find the balance.

Two failure modes

Discount strategy has two ways to fail: so protected that promotions frustrate genuine customers, or so loose that abuse drains them. The right approach lives between these, generous to real buyers and firm against exploitation.

Be generous to real customers

Your promotions should feel welcoming and easy for the honest majority. Protection that gets in their way defeats the purpose of the discount, which was to delight and win those very customers.

Be firm against abuse

At the same time, firmness against the specific abuses you actually see, stacking, leaks, serial exploiters, protects the margin so you can keep being generous. Protection funds generosity, it does not oppose it.

Adjust as you learn

The balance is not fixed. Watching how your promotions are used, and adjusting where you are too loose or too strict, is how you keep discounts both generous and protected as your business and your abusers evolve.

Key takeaways
  • Discount strategy fails by being too strict or too loose
  • Stay generous and easy for honest customers
  • Be firm against the specific abuses you see
  • Adjust the balance as you learn
