Active Discount Audit Worksheet
An inventory sheet for every live discount in a Shopify store that exposes missing caps, open-ended codes, unwanted combinations, and codes that have outgrown their audience.
Reviewed for 2026, updated September 8, 2026.
Stacking and leaks both hide in the gap between what a merchant thinks is configured and what the checkout actually allows. The fastest way to close that gap is a plain inventory: every active code and automatic discount on one sheet, with its intended audience, its limits, its end date, what it is allowed to combine with, and how its redemptions compare with the audience it was sent to. Filling the sheet in usually surfaces at least one surprise, such as a partner code with no cap, a welcome offer that combines with the seasonal sale, or a code retired in the calendar but still live at checkout.
Copy the worksheet, list every discount from your Shopify discounts report including automatic ones, and fill the last two columns from real numbers rather than memory. A code redeemed far more times than there are people on its list has leaked; run it through the Leaked Discount Code Cost Calculator at /tools/leaked-code-cost/ to put a dollar figure on it, and read /blog/spotting-leaked-discount-code/ for the other early signals. Repeat the audit monthly or whenever a new promotion launches, and use the Coupon Abuse Guard ROI Calculator at /tools/abuse-guard-roi/ to decide whether the findings justify automated protection.
| Code or offer | Intended audience and channel | Per-customer limit | Total cap and end date | Combines with | Redemptions vs audience size | Finding and action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Welcome offer for new subscribers | New email subscribers, sent by welcome email | 1 | Your cap / no end date | Shipping discounts only | Your figure vs your list size | Add an end date; check for repeat redemptions from matched addresses |
| Influencer or partner code | Followers of one creator, shared in their content | 1 | Your cap / your end date | Nothing | Your figure vs expected reach | If redemptions far exceed reach, retire and reissue as unique codes |
| Automatic seasonal sale | All shoppers, applied at checkout without a code | Not applicable | No cap / your end date | Product and shipping discounts | Your figure vs all orders in the window | Confirm it does not combine with the welcome offer; test at checkout |
| Free shipping threshold code | Cart-abandonment email recipients | 1 | Your cap / your end date | Order discounts | Your figure vs emails sent | Watch for orders arriving from search or direct traffic instead of email |
| Staff or friends discount | Employees, shared privately | Your figure | Your cap / no end date | Nothing | Your figure vs headcount | Deep discount with no end date: cap it and rotate the code on a schedule |
| Loyalty reward or store credit | Customers with points, applied in account | Per balance | Not applicable | Product discounts | Your figure vs active members | Decide whether credit may stack on sale items and write it down |
| Controlled public code you published | Anyone, listed on your own site to satisfy deal sites | 1 | No cap / your end date | Nothing | Your figure vs total orders | Keep the discount modest; this is the code you want aggregators to find |
| Retired campaign code from last quarter | Past campaign audience, should be inactive | 1 | Your cap / ended | Unknown | Your figure since the end date | Any redemption after the end date means it is still live: deactivate today |
